Understanding Different Types of Depression
Depression is complex. Depression is a disease that can linger and progress for months and years without detection . Researchers know that different types of depression will afflict 15 million people in the USA annually. Unfortunately fewer than 1/3 of these people will look for help for thier depression. In many cases the afflicted do not even realize that they are ill. It is normal in this day in age to fall prey to the stress that rules our lives. It’s more difficult to navigate the obstacles in life. Many families are surviving week to week. The recent economic crises has created even more pressure to obtain and hold a job. Stress leads to depression.
There are a lot of types of depression. Some of the labels mean the same thing. There is mental depression, medical depression, clinical depression and manic depression. Late stages of the disease are called severe depression. Depression is brought on by many associating factors. There are those that believe it is biological, that chemical imbalances in the brain lead us to depression. Depression can also be caused genetically from your family history. Those with family histories of depression are at risk.
Common factors can lead to different types of depression. Depression is often the result of substance abuse. Alcohol or drugs both show links to depression. The death of a family member can increase the chance for depression. Mental depression has taken a bad rap down through history. Prior to mental illness being recognized as a disease it was considered by many to be a personal defect. There was very little treatment offered. Every stage of depression has its ill affects. Early detection, then, is necessary to fight depression.
Once the disease has progressed to severe depression the illness must be treated. At this stage suicide is often the result. The opportunities for help have passed because the cries for help haven’t been heard. Treatment is typically ‘talk therapy’ and anti-depressants. There are also support groups that offer a helping hand. Natural herbs have also been found to work. Help is out there no matter the type of depression. If lingering signs of depression exist then please seek help.
