The Symptoms of Depression
Depression affects many people every year, causing them to become retiring, quiet and miserable, so much so that most people would say you’re a totally different person. Some people suffer with depression but don’t even realize that they do, this is because they are so wrapped up in the way they feel that they do not see the affect it is having on them.
What symptoms can you expect if you have depression?
Generally you will feel sad and miserable, you lose the enjoyment of all the things that were of great interest to you, and many lose their sexual feelings and their appetite for food. A lot of people may feel exhausted, like they have no energy to complete even the simplest tasks. One of the worst parts of depression is the feelings people have that makes them feel like a burden to others, some even feel guilty for even being alive, this makes them lose hope and feel that life is not worth living.
Another part of depression is pain; many people suffering with depression suffer with aches and pains. These pains generally appear for no reason and have no physical cure. You will normally find that most people suffering with depression will not leave their home, if they manage to get out of bed; some sufferers are more destructive and turn to alcohol and other substances that can be harmful. A lot of people find their sleeping patterns spiral out of control, some sleep sporadically, some sleep at awkward hours, and some depression sufferers hardly sleep at all.
How does it affect you?
Depression is debilitating, its affects are extremely strong. Just because depression is not a physical problem it does not mean that it wont have physical effects, as we have seen the affects of depression are both physical and mental which actually causes more issues than any other medical problem.
If someone is suffering so drastically from a physical problem then medication, or in the worst case scenario surgery can alleviate the issue but when it is a mental issue it can take a lot more patience, a lot more hard work and a lot more medical help.
Treatment
To someone suffering with depression it can feel like the end of the world, they will need every possible bit of support available to see there is a problem and try to combat it. To treat depression you need to first get them to see there is a problem, they will not be willing to cooperate a lot of the time, and may not even see there is a problem. When the person suffering with depression has finally seen there is an issue, the best course of action is to see a medical professional, someone who is impartial and can talk through the person’s problems. Because the sufferer doesn’t know the medical professional it can help put them at ease to talk. This method can take time to see real benefits as it takes a few sessions for the sufferer to become comfortable enough to talk in-depth about the feelings they have and the reasons why.
