The Attack On Depression

Depression has risen significantly since days gone by; this may be due to the added stresses of everyday lives with the added pressures of working life and the financial worries from growing debt.

Depression is more common than many people would think, it is believed that between seven and twelve percent of men are affected with medically diagnosable depression and women accounting for about twenty five percent.

There is a certain stigmatism attached to depression so there are more people suffering with depression than many people would expect. Those that do suffer with depression tend to stay away from the social environment and it is only those that are close to them and notice changes in their moods that will understand there is a problem.

Depression is generally caused by the stress of everyday life like financial problems or the breakup of a loving partnership. Moments of extreme stress caused by childhood problems and trauma from criminal activities or major car accident can also cause depression.

When someone is suffering with depression you will find that they become quiet and introvert, they feel guilty and unhappy most of the time, they stop eating and lose their sexual appetite, they lose interest in everything around them and have issues controlling their temper.

Those suffering with depression will, in most cases, not agree with others about suffering with depression, they may not even notice a change in their behavior. Underneath everything they will understand that they are very unhappy but will not want to open up to others about it.

Because of the emotions someone suffering with depression has, it can be quite difficult for family and friends as they will find it very difficult to get the sufferer to see there is a problem.

If you have a friend whom you feel may be suffering with, or on the border of depression, it can be a good exercise to monitor their moods and try to convey your opinions when you see a dip in their mood.

As a friend or family member it can be a stressful time and can really test a persons patience, but if you show support to who ever is suffering it can really help them to see there is an issue and decide they wish to resolve it.

If depression persists then talking the sufferer into seeing a medical professional is important as this can make a huge difference between resolution of the condition or the sufferer becoming worse.

Once the sufferer has agreed and decided to see the medical professional then the sufferer will hopefully be on their way to getting better, this is also the point where family and friends can relax as they know their friend or loved one can see there is an issue and is trying to find a way to get better.

Being a supportive friend or family member can really make a difference to someone who has depression and can mean the difference in managing to come out of depression and getting back to normal, sooner rather than later.
