Different Types Of Depression

Everyone knows that depression is a problem that affects a large portion of the population. Few people realize, however, that there are several different kinds of depression which have different symptoms and merit different treatments. In this article, we’ll give a brief overview of the different types of depression that exists in order to increase your knowledge.

Major depression is probably the most commonly addressed type of depression. Those who have developed a case of major depression often feel as if they are out of energy, unable to sleep properly, and just generally feel like they have the blues all the time without any real reasoning behind it. Those with major depression may neglect the activities that they commonly enjoy, and it can be a problem that will not go away without proper treatment. Those who experience cases of major depression experience the symptoms for at least two weeks without them going away. While some people get better after having one case of major depression, those with major depression often become afflicted with the disorder several times throughout their lifetime.

Dysthymia is a type of depression that is not discussed as commonly as major depression. It is a type of depression that has symptoms that are of a lesser degree than major depression. People that have a case of dysthymia may have some of the same symptoms as those who have major depression, but they may experience them to a lesser degree and may only experience a few of the symptoms as opposed to a majority of them. Those who suffer from dysthymia often face the problem for their entire lives.

Bipolar disorder is a very specific and very different type of depression from the rest. It’s a type of depression that does not occur nearly as often as the other forms of depression, and it is trademarked by the afflicted individual feeling extreme emotional highs and then extreme emotional lows. During the emotional high periods, the person may make bad decisions and spend lots of money, as well as talking a whole lot and being overly excited. When an emotional low hits, however, the individual may find themselves feeling way down in the dumps. This constant influx of emotional feelings can be devastating to a person’s way of life, and it is a problem that needs to be addressed in order to be aided.

Now that you know more about the basic types of depression that exist in the world, you’ll be able to tell if you or someone you know is experiencing a case of major depression, dysthymia, or bipolar disorder. If you suspect that someone is afflicted with one of these problems, you should recommend that they seek the consultation of a doctor in order to ensure that the problem is properly taken care of. Medications can be of much merit when it comes to helping to relieve the symptoms that many experience when they have a case of depression, and its important to remember that although depression is a mental disorder, it can manifest itself in very real physical symptoms, so don’t take it lightly.
